Rwanda is a forward thinking, dynamic and rapidly developing African country, which oozes African culture and charm. With its beautiful hills and high altitude, Rwanda is known as a the Switzerland of Africa!
However, in 1994 Rwanda suffered a tragic genocide when a staggering one million people were killed over a few short weeks.
The genocide was ended by the current President of Rwanda, Paul Kigame. During his leadership President Kigame has led successful reconciliation efforts, implemented large scale infrastructure projects and has set the country on an ambitious long term economic and social plan which is proving hugely successful. Rwanda is now an oasis of peace in an often delicate part of Africa.
Whilst Rwanda is surrounded by countries with varying degrees of unrest and insecurity, Rwanda itself is completely at peace with a strong army and police force. As a result, Rwanda is now not only ranked one of the safest countries in Africa, but also with one of the cleanest environments, exemplified by clean streets and countryside, supported by a total disdain of plastic use.
In addition, great strides have been made in promoting Women's rights. Rwanda is the first country in the world with a female majority in Parliament, with women holding over 60% of the seats, and with that control of decision making processes. Also, as you travel the country you will notice that there are various projects with majority female control and participation.
It is a country that is safe for foreign travellers, backed by the support of a very visible non-corrupt police force. Food is well prepared and restaurants are generally very good. There are no street hawkers or hard sales techniques, and crime against tourists is almost unheard of. For the most part Rwandans speak English and are very courteous and delighted to see tourists enjoying their country. You will leave with many local friends!
Most roads are newly paved and in great condition. Regular speed cameras and police checks ensure drivers are orderly and seldom pass 60kmh.
Malaria is rare and non-existent in some of the higher elevations - however, bug spray is advised along with long sleeve shirts and trousers, as this will also help with horse fly bites on safari.
Overall the health services in Rwanda are very good for foreign tourists, and wherever you are in Rwanda you are never more than 4 hours or so away from Kigali, the capital, where the best medical assistance is located. In the event of medical care being required, there are an abundance of private ambulances on call to provide urgent medical assistance and take you to an appropriate medical centre, and if necessary Kigali.
Finally, you will be guided by the very experienced Jason Donovan throughout your adventure, to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip is had by all!
